1. First and most important thing to make your laptop run faster is to keep it cool. Don’t go with its name (lappy ) if you are using high memory/cpu consuming programs, like games, designing software’s...
Keep at some gap from ground, and if it’s really has a heating problem use external fan coolers.
Excessive heating will lead to unexpected shutdown of the system and eventually will cause hardware failures.
2. Periodically check for spywares. Use programs like Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html)
Spywares are the biggest reason for slow performance. They are not detected by simple anti-virus software and keep residing on the hard disc. If you see overuse of system CPU and Memory in the Task Manager it might be because of Spywares, they run unnecessary processes in background.
3. Most of the people don't care about this. But clean you laptop so that air flow will be free through the heated CPU. Check for the dust jamming the fan and other openings.
4. Use CCleaner (www.piriform.com) to remove cookies, temp files, old check disc files, old prefetch data etc.
5. Defragment you Disc weekly to speed up hard disc read capability. Over a long time due creation and deletion of files on hard disc the data on hard disc becomes scattered randomly. So it becomes difficult for the OS to search for these data when needed and hence slows the speed. By default in Windows 7/Vista this is scheduled and will run in backend.
6. Keep free space on hard disc. 20% free space is good for normal running of PC. This is needed for Virtual Memory and space needed while running programs. (Every program and website opened will create temp files)
7. Tweak you registry since corrupt registry slows down the performance to a very high level. This may also result in system crash if not checked at right time. There are free registry cleanup software like
WinMend Registry Defrag, Eusing Free Registry Defrag, Auslogics Registry Cleaner, Comodo Registry Cleaner, Glarysoft Registry Repair etc
8. For Windows7 and Vista users there is an option to use USB as memory device apart from Virtual memory and RAM. It allows you to use non-volatile flash memory—like a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory.
9. In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to enhance the performance of your pc, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.
10. Remove useless programs from startup list. Use command msconfig in Run to open the dialog box.
